KTM is introducing a new two-stroke engine with a fuel injection system to its 2018 EXC enduro lineup. KTM calls the new technology “Transfer Port Injection” or TPI, with a new 250 EXC TPI and 300 EXC TPI arriving in European showrooms this summer while North Americans will have to wait until late fall for the 250 XC-W TPI.
“This is an incredibly exciting development for KTM. We have been developing two-stroke fuel injection for some time, and our goal was to create competitive motorcycles with all the benefits of fuel injection, while fitting into our READY TO RACE mantra,” says Joachim Sauer, KTM Product Marketing Manager.
The mantra may already be truth as KTM riders Andreas Lettenbichler and Lars Enockl are rumored to have raced on pre-production fuel injected 300 models in the Roof of Africa race in Lesotho late last year.
“There has been extensive testing and considerations for our Research and Development team to take into account during this process, so we are very motivated by this next step and world first in technology, as we take a major step forward in this segment,” says Sauer.
According to KTM, the new engine consumes much less gas than carbureted models and forgo the need to pre-mix fuel or adjust jetting. KTM will reveal more information on its TPI technology in May.
